Finding Purpose: Dan’s Journey at The Gumnut Place

At 25, Dan found himself still living at home with his parents while all his siblings had found employment and moved on with their lives

At 25, Dan found himself still living at home with his parents while all his siblings had found employment and moved on with their lives. When his younger brother found a job and he still hadn’t it pushed Dan into calling at Gumnut and asking for a job.

This was two years ago and Dan started soon after in the wood workshop as a Supported Employee. He was nervous and unsure as he had never held a real job before. and the idea of working with tools and machinery was overwhelming. But at The Gumnut Place, he found more than just employment—he found acceptance. His colleagues didn’t see his disability; they saw him—his potential, his strengths, and the person he could become.

Over time, with encouragement from his team and the steady guidance of his mentors, Dan began to thrive. He learned to measure and cut blast and surveyor pegs, build pallets, and operate tools with confidence. What started as small steps turned into leaps, and soon, Dan wasn’t just fulfilling tasks—he was excelling. The once shy, unsure young man found himself stepping up as a Support Worker when the team was short-staffed. He excelled at this and his teammates began looking up to him, trusting his skills, and valuing his leadership.

Dan’s hard work didn’t go unnoticed. In October 2024, at CTC Day, Dan was surprised with an award—a recognition that he was truly deserving of. His dedication, growth, and the respect he earned from his peers made him stand out. For Dan, it wasn’t just about the award—it was about the validation that he was an important part of something bigger.

What Dan treasures most isn’t just the work—it’s the connections. The Gumnut Place became more than just a workplace; it became his community. He has forged deep friendships and felt the pleasure of being part of a great team.

Dan’s story is one of transformation and his journey is a testament to the power of opportunity and inclusion. The Gumnut Place has given him the opportunity to learned new skills, grown in confidence, and become a valued member of the team.

With services ranging from secure document destruction, engraving and badge making services, a wood workshop, a commercial laundry, and commercial kitchen, The Gumnut Place creates opportunities for people like Dan to shine.

By supporting The Gumnut Place, you’re not just backing a local business—you’re changing lives. For Dan, and so many others, it’s a place of purpose and belonging, giving people the opportunity to thrive.
